Lily: Arrived March 2013
In early 2013, a woman moving over to WA from NSW, approached us about bringing her animals – Lily the pig and Lucy the sheep, to Happy Hooves Farm Sanctuary in exchange for volunteering to help the animals – those already here, hers and others to come; she was studying veterinary science and also working with holistic treatment for animals.
She had saved Lily and Lucy plus a steer called Davey, as babies, from a production farm situation. Davey was unfortunately not able to be brought over, but Lily and Lucy came across in a protected trailer and arrived at Happy Hooves in March 2013. All three had been best buddies, so it was devastating that she was unable to bring Davey, but at least Lily and Lucy got to stay together.
Lily and Lucy remained together when they first got here, living with Ellen DeHeiferis, but Lily had to be moved to a smaller paddock for us to care for her feet, which kept getting splits in the hooves. Lily likes her own space and does not play well with others, so she has her paddock and shelter with Henry the sheep – another “special” individual who doesn’t play well with others. They get along well for the vast majority of the time, but every now and then they try to show each other who’s boss with a bit of posturing and bunting.
Lily has ongoing issue with her skin that the vet believes is either localised infection due to dry, irritated skin or, as she is not responding to treatment as expected, she may have an immune system issue. She gets regular washes, ointment as often as she allows and antibiotics.
