Volunteer Weekend at Kookaburra Farm Sanctuary – 8th & 9th March 2014

busybeekookaburra

This way to the Busy Bee!….

Hi Everyone!

We are in need of some HELP with outstanding chores on our property called “Kookaburra” in Gidgegannup, Western Australia. We have set aside the weekend of 8th & 9th March to get some super important jobs done, and we’re wondering if you would like to pitch in and help us? 😀

For those of you who don’t know, “Kookaburra” is a non profit farm haven for a collection of needy animals in the beautiful Gidgegannup hills. We have over 30 large farm animals and approx 50 animals all up, with more rescues on the horizon. We keep our rescue numbers relatively small and manageable so that we can give them all the absolute best of care, each and every animal here has a name and is adored.

So – if you love animals and enjoy working outdoors, if you enjoy spending time with people who are driven by compassion, and if you love eating delicious cruelty free food – you will no doubt enjoy visiting our special little place. 🙂

To get involved we need you to please register your attendance on our VolunteerSpot calendar via this link: http://vols.pt/X9RUas. This will take you to a sign up page to view our “monthly busy bee calendar”. Once you’ve accessed the calendar you will see the two dates scheduled for 8th & 9th March. Here you will see the variety of positions we need filled and you can select and register for the tasks you would like to get involved in.

Brief overview of the busy bee days:

Saturday 8th – is “Operation Cotton Bush Cull”. This day will be dedicated to weeding some large paddocks of the insidious Wild Cotton Bush Weed, as well as one of his sinister friends – the Potato Weed. The paddocks in question are LARGE so we hope to get some good numbers helping out to make the job easier for all. Many hands make light work. 🙂

Sunday 9th – is “Operation Rooster Run”. The aim of the day will be to erect an enclosure for our 3 wayward Roosters (and future residents) that will not only protect them from foxes, but will also protect us from kneecapping attacks, and the garden from topsoil demolition. 😉 There may also be residual weeding jobs left over on the Sunday that we can finish off.

We will provide refreshments and a delicious vegan lunch on both days. You are welcome to BYO water and food though provided the food is vegan please. Sunscreen, appropriate footwear (uneven terrain in long dry grass), and appropriate clothes are essential. Please refer to the VolunteerSpot calendar for more details on what to bring on the day.

Hope to see you soon!

PERTH – Rally with us to ban live export! Oct 6th.

Animals Australia are promoting a national rally for THIS SATURDAY to protest the horrors of Live Export. Please spread the word and support this critical movement to end this abhorrent trade.

“Join us in Fremantle this Saturday Oct 6th, 10AM Outside E Shed Markets, Victoria Quay

If you care about animals and want to see them protected from cruelty, then please join us this Saturday as we rally side-by-side, right across the country, for an end to live export.

As you read this, more than 10,000 Australian sheep await an uncertain fate in Pakistan. They have witnessed half their companions slaughtered in the most brutal ways — clubbed, stabbed and buried alive. Every day that passes, more and more animals are put at risk of extreme cruelty and abuse.

Despite assurances from the Australian Government that cruelty in the live export trade would be addressed, animals continue to be neglected, brutalised, and have their throats cut while fully conscious. Tragedy after tragedy reveals that animals exported live will always be at risk. And yet, they continue to be sent. This sends the appalling message to the rest of the world that Australia accepts animal cruelty.

The animals are depending on us — we must urgently let politicians know that caring Australians will not vote for political parties that support live export. This is your chance to join with others at a family-friendly event to rally for a kinder future for animals.

I sincerely hope you can join us,

Lyn White
Campaign Director

P.S. I realise that Saturday 6th October is short notice for a national rally. But I’m sure you’ll agree that the latest shocking abuse of animals in the live export trade warrants a rapid response on a national scale. The Animals Australia team is pulling out all stops to create an event that our politicians won’t be able to ignore. Unavoidably, this has meant that the launch of Make it Possible has been delayed one week. I’ll keep you updated as our campaigns progress.

All welcome! Hear from Animals Australia Investigator Lyn White, leading politicians; mass petition signing; campaign activities; family-friendly.

Cruelty Free Festival 2012 in Subiaco

It’s that time of year again when my all time FAVOURITE event hits Perth – the Cruelty Free Festival! (insert fanfare, whoops and whistles here)

I was lucky enough to be involved in last years event where I manned the information table – handing out educational literature on animal issues and screening documentaries. This year I have been a tad too busy to get involved in offering my services but I still plan to go along and help out a wee bit at the A-MAZing vegan cake stall, sausage sizzle & pie stand. Yup – they’re ALL vegan and they were incredibly popular! Feedback from last years event was so positive with most of the food selling out within a couple of hours (so don’t go late – you don’t want to miss out this year!).

The other little plan I have up my sleeve for this years event is to bring along Timmy the Lamb so he can say hi to some of his fans. Yes, I say fans because Timmy has become a bit of a celeb on Facebook, and there are quite a few people just itching to give him a hug and hang with “Mr T”. I cannot say that this is definite yet as Timmy is still learning to tolerate crowds and he does have a bit of an inherent fear of dogs that may hinder his ability to attend a pet friendly event. My first priority is to Timmy’s welfare so only time and training will tell if he will be ok to come along. If he does, Timmy will be hanging out with the equally gorgeous Levy Lamb – who is quite the seasoned expert at attending public events and I’m sure will be able to give T a pointer or two on how to chill out and just soak up all the glory.

Apart from these two little stars… the Cruelty Free Festival has so much more to offer. From cruelty free fashion, food, cooking, products, and services to live bands, informative talks and a down right groovy and peaceful vibe.. this is one of Perth’s MUST GO events. Now don’t worry if you’re not a vegan or a vegetarian.. this event is for ANYONE and EVERYONE who wishes to enjoy a peaceful and happy day, whilst checking out all things “Cruelty Free”. There will be so much to see, touch, taste, listen to and do.. so pack your picnic rug, an open mind, a loaded wallet, and an empty stomach – then head on down and immerse yourself in all that good stuff.

The following additional information comes via Animal Rights Advocates – who are the organisers of the event. You can also click here to go direct to the Cruelty Free Festival website.

The Cruelty Free Festival is an initiative of Animal Rights Advocates Inc. The festival started in 2010 with the intention of raising awareness about animal rights, celebrating cruelty-free living, social justice and sustainability.

On the Cruelty Free Festival website you will find information about the festival including attendees, stallholders, transportation guides and anything else you will need to make the festival more awesome!

There will be cooking demonstrations, information booths offering materials on a wide variety of animal rights subjects, environmental sustainability, personal and family, health and lifestyles, fun activities for children, live music and so much more.

Cruelty Free Super – Information Nights – May 2012

Most of the people who follow this website are avid animal lovers and caring consumers who do their best to ensure they are not contributing to animal exploitation and cruelty.  We all love our animal friends and try our best to do the right thing by them.  But how many of us think about what our superannuation dollars fund?  You may be surprised to learn that you could be inadvertently investing in companies and industries who are involved in weapons development/production, animal and/or human rights exploitation/violations, environmental damage, and even tobacco production. Unless you manage your own super, it’s very hard to take control of what your money is injected into.   So it’s wonderful news to discover that one superannuation company “Cruelty Free Super” is addressing this important issue and now offering “Cruelty Free Money”.

Sounds good right?  I’m just amazed it has taken this long for our super funds to offer something like this!  Here’s what the Cruelty Free Super website says they seek to invest in:

“Cruelty Free Super will seek to invest in companies involved in:

• Environmental Protection
• Clean Energy
• Recycling
• Water and Waste management
• Companies providing services or products of benefit to society
• Education
• Healthcare (subject to negative exclusions)”

You can read more about this fantastic new Super Fund here: http://www.crueltyfreesuper.com.au/?pg=Home but if you would like to hear more and be able to have your questions answered face to face, now’s your chance.  Lee Coates (Director of Ethical Money) is currently conducting an Australia wide tour, hosting free talks and raising money for animal sanctuaries and rescue.

I’m a little late with this post so there are only a few more dates coming up (I’m sorry I missed some, please forgive me!).  They are:

Melbourne – Friday 4 May 6:45pm at Port Philip Eco Centre – money raised goes to Edgar’s Mission & Elwood Urban Sanctuary

Adelaide – Wednesday 9 May 6:45pm at Bliss Organic Cafe – money raised goes to Freedom Hill Sanctuary

Perth – Monday 14 May 6:45pm at PAWS – money raised goes to PAWS & Animal Actionist

As you can see, the Perth event will be donating money to PAWS and Animal Actionist, which is very exciting for us.  Any money raised will go towards improving and expanding the scope of work we do here on this website, so we hope all our Perth friends will go along and support us, as well as the wonderful people at PAWS.

As for a cruelty free super product, I’m keen as mustard to learn more about that.  I’m sure you are too.

Love AA. xx

“Australians have been crying out for a way to ensure their compulsory super contributions fit with their personal ethics. This Super fund offers informed consumers an investment path that will be kind to animals as well as the world we all live in. It is long overdue.” Animals Australia Executive Director, Glenys Oogjes.

Kanyana OPEN DAY!!! 6th May 2012

Hey everyone, if you’ve got some spare time on Sunday 6th May – grab your partner, kids, parents and/or friends and head on out to Kanyana Wildlife Sanctuary in Lesmurdie. I used to volunteer at this amazing place and I have nothing but great memories of enjoying the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with beautiful native Australian animals. The work Kanyana does to help sick & injured WA wildlife, as well as rare species breeding programs, is invaluable and deserves our support. So please go along for a fun day out, for the chance to meet adorable Aussie wildlife and to support Kanyana’s work.
